What is the best grit sandpaper for color sanding orange peal out of clearcoat?

i just painted my friends car, and there is alot of orange peal in the clear. i plan on color sanding the orange peal out of it and then buffing it, but i was wondering what would be the best grit of sandpaper to use. do you think that 1200grit would be too coarse?

there are 6 coats of clear but i can't sand too much off because only the top 2 coats are total clear, the other 4 coats of clear have pearl and metallic in them so i don't want to sand into them.

holy crap! you painted a car and don't know what grit to use????????? maybe you bit off too much? start with 2000 and get caorser only if you need to. finish with 3000 and a good buffing and wax.
Reply:I would try some rubbing compound first to see if that has the desired effect. If there is a lot of peal you could use a buffing machine.
