Is there a specific way to apply tanner or a specific thing to put on it to reduce the orange-y-ness?

pick a good tanner. I use jergens. get a gradual tanner and only use it for a few days at a time.
Reply:I have found Jergen's Natural Glow to be the best. It is easy to apply, no streaks, no orange and it gets darker gradually as you add more to your desired tone. You can choose light, medium, and I think dark varieties.
Reply:It's all about what tanner you choose and what skin tone you have i would suggest a lotion with a tanner in it that gradually builds your tan.
