Will a hybrid seedling from am orange purchase from a grocer produce fruit, and if so, how long would it take?

A friend planted an orange seed from an orange bought from the store, about 6 yrs ago. The tree is healthy, still in a pot. If planted into the ground, would it be possible for this to produce fruit? Would it need 2 trees to pollinate? I know absolutely nothing about growing things.

The actual answer is "yes" your tree may produce fruit. But the real question is what kind of fruit will you get? That answer is "sour" fruit, because agricultural citrus must be grafted as a young plant with the cultivar of the fruit that you want to produce. Once the tree is outside, in the ground and getting nutrition, it might flower--but will need to be pollinated to produce fruit.

But, even if you do get sour fruit, that isn't a waste because there are a lot of things you can make with sour juice by just adding sugar. Sour orange pie, orange zest, orange marmalade, citrus salad dressing, etc.

If your friend plants the citrus tree, it must be planted in a hole that brings the top of the soil it is in now, even with the soil that it is going in. Water well for the first month, twice a week unless you are getting rain in your area. Citrus trees need some water and full sun to thrive plus citrus fertilizer 4 times a year. Do not over water because their root systems can't take it. Remember, citrus is very sensitive to cold.
Reply:The flowers and a bee , would be enough to produce, however it takes an orange tree 20+ years to produce.Pears and apples don't take quite as long they produce in 12-15 years. Most trees if started in a pot don't do well.Unless they have beeen outside the entire time.
